The Third Gilmore Girl
By Kelly Bishop • ★★★★★
Gilmore Girls is a regular part of my fall routine. I rewatch it like clockwork every September through October, so when I saw Kelly Bishop had a memoir, there was no hesitation. I also knew she was part of the original Broadway cast of A Chorus Line — and as a theatre nerd whose favorite song is “At the Ballet” — it was a complete no-brainer.
What I expected to be a season-by-season deep dive into Gilmore Girls turned out to be something lovelier: a genuine insight into a woman coming up in the theatre world, with just a peppering of Gilmore Girls throughout. I loved learning the history of A Chorus Line and how hard Bishop worked to be part of it. I also loved the detail — news to me — that she had previously worked with Edward Hermann, her future on-screen husband, long before Stars Hollow ever existed.
But it was the ending that stuck with me most. Bishop’s account of her last few years with her husband is tender and quietly devastating in the best way. I can only hope my own relationship lasts that long with that same tenderness and care.
Gilmore Girls wasn’t the focal point of this book — but it carried the same warmth and comfort that Stars Hollow always has. That felt exactly right.
