Phoebe Berman’s Gonna Lose It
By Brooke Averick • ★★★★
As I write this out, I just got what the title actually means — and it’s so perfectly funny. I loved this book. It was delightful and endearing, and as a girlie with anxiety, I got it on a level that felt almost uncomfortably personal. Ironically, I also found Phoebe annoying and irrational at times. Is that how I sound when anxiety overcomes me? Oy vey.
Phoebe is at a point in her life where she’s trying to figure out what makes her content and fulfilled — and while my reasons are different, I hear you on the career crisis, Phoebe. She uses lists to organize her thoughts, which theoretically should help move things along but ultimately just prolonged the task at hand. Anxiety shows up in so many different ways, and this one felt too relatable.
At the end of the day this was a love story, and I didn’t root for Matthew, and I didn’t expect the twist with Finn and Jonathan. But the romances were sweet, endearing, and easy-going — and honestly, we need more of that in this world. I found myself audibly giggling at times. The missing star is simply because it isn’t the most profound or well-written book I’ve ever read. I’ll be curious to see how long it stays with me.
