Night Road

Kristin Hannah gives me emotional hangovers — I genuinely can’t read her books too close together. Night Road was no exception. I blew through it in just a few days and still needed time to recover. It wasn’t as compelling as The Great Alone or The Nightingale, but it was still so good.
Jude was unlikeable at nearly every point in the story, and I think that was intentional. Pre-accident she was a helicopter mom — controlling, deciding everything for her kids, leaving no room for them to just exist. After Mia died, vengeance consumed her. I understood it to a point, but she became unsufferable in a way that was hard to root through. Lexi’s arc was different — her life was genuinely hard, but I do think she had an easier transition out of jail because she had people in her corner. Not everyone does, and the book doesn’t let you forget that.
There was something about this book that felt slightly contradictory at times — I can’t quite put my finger on what — but it didn’t stop me from being in tears by the end. That’s Kristin Hannah for you.
