Best Offer Wins Review — Marisa Kashino

Best Offer Wins

Best Offer Wins popped up on TikTok toward the end of the year, but no one was really saying what the book was about or why it was good — just that it was. I was mostly drawn in by the cover, and when I spotted it at the library, I snatched it up.

I devoured it in two days. I’d unintentionally fallen into a “women going mad” book theme, and this was one of my favorites from the bunch. I didn’t realize going in that it was a satirical thriller — honestly, if someone told you a book was about a woman trying to buy a house, would you think it was a thriller? Probably not.

There are no characters in this book you can root for. In fact, I actively rooted against the main character pretty quickly. She spirals and becomes so unlikable so fast that it was partly my investment in her failure that propelled me to finish the book as quickly as I did.

I got to see the author speak live at Elliott Bay Book Co., and she spoke so well to the satire at the heart of the story. The themes are so relatable to millennials that the predicaments the characters find themselves in almost don’t seem that ridiculous.
