Books for Feeling Emotionally Hungover

Some books don’t wreck you loudly — they wreck you quietly, and you don’t notice until the last page turns and you’re just sitting there. These four are for the after: a little raw, needing something gentle enough to hold you but honest enough not to lie to you.

Kindred by Octavia Butler

Kindred

One of my favorite books of all time. It’s extremely well written, with a story so compelling and fast-paced I genuinely could not put it down. I’ll say it plainly — the TV adaptation did the book no justice. Read this one instead.

The People We Keep by Allison Larkin

The People We Keep

This one felt deeply relatable to me — it’s about someone finding herself and building a family entirely on her own terms, when the one she was born into wasn’t enough. It’s the kind of story that leaves you rooting for someone to finally choose themselves.

Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren

Love and Other Words

A sweet, tender love story that ripped my heart out by the end — in the best and worst way. I loved this one, and I’m still not sure I could bring myself to reread it.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

The Nightingale

Heartbreaking in a way that still haunts me to this day. This one has stayed with me long after I closed it, and I’m counting down to the movie adaptation.
